Louis graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for a civil engineering consulting firm, Bartlett & West in Topeka, KS, for 31 years, where he specialized in potable water utilities.

He is also very active in the Catholic Church and Catholic school system. He has served terms on various school boards and finance councils and is currently in his sixth year on the Board of Trustees at Hayden High School.

He has been married to his wife, Jan, since 1996 and they have four children: Hanna, Brett, Daniel, and Grace. The family lives on a farm located between Lawrence and Topeka.
